Yamano Big Band Jazz Festival

Yamano Music, which aims to make a social contribution by planning activities that encourage the spread of music, celebrates the 125th year of its founding in 2017. The company has been hosting its YAMANO BIG BAND JAZZ CONTEST, geared to university students, for 47 years in a row. The total number of participants exceeds more than 40,000 music players including many popular musicians affecting the current jazz scene and numerous active amateurs.

Two years ago, in 2015, Yamano Music, started another music event called the Yamano Big Band Jazz Festival for adult players. This year, the second festival was held in Meguro, Tokyo on March 11. It is said there are about 300 big bands in Japan and a total of 10 big bands performed at this festival, mainly from Osaka and Tokyo. This concert included a wide variety of bands, including former band mates from high school and university, and players with more than thirty years of experience. Each group had 30 minutes in which to perform three to six titles.
The last and best part of this concert was the One Day Pick Up Band by guest commentators, Mr. Kazuhiko Kondo and Mr. Eijiro Nakagawa, with selected amateur players who participated in the concert. The location of the next concert has not been decided yet, but is sure to cause excitement in the big band jazz scene.
