Yamaha Sells Kagoshima Semiconductor Business

Yamaha completed business transaction agreement with Phenitec Semiconductor Corp., Okayama Pref. on March 27 to sell Yamaha Kagoshima Semiconductor, a subsidiary company.

Founded in 1987, Yamaha Kagoshima Semiconductor had served as a key manufacturing base of Yamaha semiconductor business. In 2012 it turned into an exclusive factory supplying smartphone manufacturers with electronic sensors.

In a move to rebuild the semiconductor business to be more flexible to meet the needs of the industry, Yamaha announced last October to sell it to Phenitech Semiconductor, which was planning expansion of semiconductor manufacturing business in Kagoshima. The transaction will be completed on October 1. Phenitec has agreed to employ all workers of Yamaha Kagoshima Semiconductor.

Yamaha has already commissioned manufacturing geomagnetic sensors to makers mainly in Taiwan. The restructuring will enhance competitiveness and flexibility of Yamaha’s semiconductor business and allows the company to explore the fields of sound.
