MIDI Goes Universal Standard

AMEI (Association of Musical Electronics Industry) staged 6th annual meeting on May 11 at Hotel Metropolitan Edmont, Tokyo.

In his opening remarks, Yutaka Hasegawa, president said, “We have worked for years to make MIDI Standard to be recognized as universal standards. It’s our pleasure to announce that IEC (International Electrotechnical Committee) recently has approved MIDI Standard to include into the International Standards more than 30 years after the birth of MIDI technology and regulations. We pursue the vision of Mr. Ikutaro Kakehashi, co-developer of the technology who passed away in April, and further promote the standard for the benefit of the music products industry.”

AMEI has collaborated with MMA (MIDI Manufacturers Association) U.S. since 2010 recognizing importance of universal level MIDI Standard like USB, HTML5 and other technologies in the global market. The detailed specification will be published in September.

MIDI Standard Committee has launched a new working group, Future MIDI Expansion with Capability Inquiry WG to develop expanded communications protocol of MIDI 1.0 Specification which will provide the musical instruments manufacturers with advanced applications of the technology in different fields.
