2017 Retail Music Market Survey (Jan.-June)

Japan Music Trades interviewed 48 music retailers throughout Japan in search of music sales during the first half of this year.

The result is 52% of the total replied sales went up over the same period of last year. Twenty nine percent of them reported no change, and 19% said sales declined. As it was last year, flat sales continued until early spring were offset by considerable surge during spring holiday season from the end of April through the beginning of May.

About the performance of general economy, 69% commented that there were no signs of uptick. Contrary to the official announcement by Japanese Government that Japan’s general economy is improving continually, it has been unfelt by music retailers yet.

While 44% reported increasing traffic of young customers, they expected possibilities of the untapped market as they see more retirees and silver age population coming into the stores for instrumental lesson and purchase of music gears these days.

They also pointed new characteristic products, development of human resource as well as consistent and well-thought marketing approach will make difference in business. Fifty eight percent of the retailers were expecting much in business toward the largest sales season after July.
