Yamaha Presents AI-assisted Installation Program

Yamaha’s YOO AI project helps support pianists with myriads of musical experience and performance assistance.

Following “Duet with YOO” installation program held as part of  “South by Southwest (SXSW)” exhibition in Austin, Texas in March, Yamaha presented the installation program at Yamaha Ginza Building, Tokyo, from April 25 through May 22.

AI technology of Duet with YOO accompanies you (pianist) with matched performance chasing images displayed on the screen. As the performers play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” in their original styles with different intensity, staccato, tenuto, tempo, etc. on piano, YOO flawlessly joins and plays the music in ensemble.

During 4 choruses in play, AI continuously studies the played music to provide best duet performance. Thus, YOO delivers fine ensemble music. When the keys are pressed, lights splash on the display screen to give the audience an exciting effect of image works.

The semi-open exhibit space drew eyes and ears of shoppers including children and young people in their 20s.

Yamaha reports that the installation works much appealed to entry-level pianists. Unprecedented fun experience on piano may inspire non-music makers, make them drop in nearby music stores and music teaching studios, and start piano lesson. Responses from the visitors will be reflected on future development of advanced user-friendly AI performance assistance technology.
